The subject of vocation comes up a few times a year for us at church. It happens during homilies, retreat talks, and conversations with our priests. They often ask us, “What is your vocation?” I’ve always thought of that as, “What is your job?” I’ve been asked enough times now, I know they’re really asking, “What is Jesus calling you to do?”
In the past, when someone asked me, “What do you do?” I would answer with either “Mathematician” or “Analyst.” After quitting that career job, I started answering that same question with, “Nothing… I’m just a stay-at-home mom.” But “nothing” couldn’t be further from the truth. I work harder than I ever have in my life. I just don’t earn a paycheck, and I never get a day off. (The good news is — I don’t want a day off.)
Webster defines vocation as “a summons or strong inclination to a particular state or course of action.” A job, on the other hand, is “a regular remunerative position.” Although they can be related, your vocation isn’t necessarily your paying job. Likewise, your paying job isn’t necessarily your vocation. And who is summoning you? or inclining you?
I felt God summoning me to leave the workforce and be a SAHM during the COVID lockdown. And I felt bad about it. I felt REALLY bad. I felt like I had to justify it to everyone, especially myself. Over the last few years, I learned more about how Jesus calls each of us to a vocation. That calling may or may not be tied to our paycheck. I had to trust in Jesus, that He had me on the right path. I’ve had doubts along the way (and I’m sure I’ll have more!), but I include my decisions and my path in prayer. I also spend time in the Adoration chapel listening to Jesus and asking Him my questions. Proverbs 3:5–6 has been helpful while trying to trust the process.
Now I finally have the confidence to tell people proudly that I’m a SAHM — a confidence that comes from Jesus, the One who gave me the direction in the first place. If you’re having doubts, just reach out to Him. He’ll guide you. Remember, you’re going to be ok!
